Acne Treatment and Prevention - Do Lasers Work?

There are certainly a wide variety of acne treatments on the market today. There are topical creams, lotions and toners available for every type of skin imaginable. Not one of these treatments has been shown to rid the skin of acne for everyone. One reason is that there are a variety of types of acne. Different treatments work differently for each one. Laser treatments may be the one treatment that can effectively work for all.

Laser treatment burst onto the scene a few years ago and has since been used with a very high degree of success. It has been quite successful at treating the scars associated with acne as well as the acne itself.

Originally laser treatments were used primarily for anti aging benefits. Doctors have only recently discovered its effectiveness at the treatment of acne. Patients have been pleased to discover that laser treatments are as effective at acne treatment as they have been in the anti aging sector.

Laser treatments have been used in the successful treatment of acne scars as well as the treatment of active acne. This treatment of both sides of the acne problem has been well received by the patient population. Teenagers have been treated with laser treatments when other acne treatments have failed. Adults opt for laser treatments immediately because of its high success rate.

Laser treatments work by attacking the bacteria that is responsible for creating acne as well as shrinking the oil producing glands. While both methods are particularly effective, doctors have found that the shrinking of the glands to be the most appropriate course of treatment.

Different lasers are used depending on the type of treatment a doctor is performing. If a doctor is shrinking the oil producing glands they will use a specific set of lasers. If they are attacking bacteria another set of lasers is used. Typically a yellow light is used if the doctor is trying to eliminate bacteria.

The prophorine inside the acne reacts with the yellow light, which causes the prophorine to produce oxygen. This reaction will kill the bacteria.

Laser treatment for acne is still in the beginning stages of development. Research will continue on this promising new treatment. Acne is such a far reaching problem that there is ample motivation for research to continue in this field. Newer better methods are being tested every day. Doctors are experimenting with different lasers and lights to further improve their current research. This is very promising in the treatment of acne.
